Gaisberg Observatory

Rainbach im Innkreis, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The Gaisberg Observatory near Schärding invites visitors to enjoy fascinating views into the depths of space. Using high-powered telescopes, visitors can see the Moon, planets, star clusters, nebulae, and distant galaxies with their own eyes.

The Gaisberg Observatory near Schärding is a private astronomical observatory and bears the international IAU observatory code B21. For many years, the observatory has been dedicated to astronomical observation, astrophotography, and minor planet research.

At the heart of the observatory is a large 350-mm catadioptric telescope, whose special optical design enables high-contrast observations. The equipment is complemented by other high-quality telescopes and modern technology for visual observation and astrophotography.

When weather conditions are favorable, visitors are treated to an impressive view of our cosmos. Depending on the season, observers can see, among other things, the Moon’s cratered landscapes, planets in our solar system, binary stars, star clusters, luminous gas nebulae, and distant galaxies.

A particular focus of the observatory is not only to showcase astronomy but also to convey it in an understandable and vivid way. During observation evenings, visitors learn interesting facts about the current night sky, how to navigate the constellations, and the celestial objects being observed.

Another long-standing focus has been the observation and measurement of minor planets. Thanks to the observatory’s work, numerous minor planets have already been officially named. The names range from regionally significant figures and places to internationally renowned Austrians—including , for example , Schärding, Alfred Kubin, Lukas Weißhaidinger, and Felix Baumgartner. In this way, the Gaisberg Observatory also makes a special contribution to the documentation and dissemination of astronomical research.

We offer guided astronomical tours and observation evenings for groups, clubs, schools, and companies, as well as for interested individuals. Visits are possible only by prior registration or appointment.
