Wolfgang Chapel and Kopfwehstein

Eidenberg, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The picturesque Wolfgang Chapel and the legendary Kopfwehstein invite you to explore Eidenberg. Along the popular Kopfwehstein Trail (E7), visitors can not only experience the impressive building, but also the fascinating nature of the Mühlviertel region.

Wolfgang Chapel:
The masonry of the Wolfgang Chapel encloses the top of a boulder. Refracted light falls through a small bull's-eye window onto the surface of the stone inside the chapel. Behind the wrought iron grille, in front of a statue of St. Wolfgang, you can see a bowl-shaped depression and a second, rounded depression in the stone with two channel-shaped extensions. According to legend, St. Wolfgang left these impressions in the stone. The depression is said to be from his mitre and the hollow represents his footprint.

Headache stone:
According to legend, St. Wolfgang also passed through the Eidenberg Forest on his travels and, tired from his long hike, took a rest here. The man of God laid his head on the stone. When Wolfgang got up again, the stone had the shell that is still visible today.
