The drawing by Johann Lamprecht (1816 - 1895) gives the viewer an idea of the sheer vastness an enormity of this former castle complex which was developed into an important state fortress by the Bravarian dukes Albrecht I. an Louis VII. the Bearded in the 14th and 15th Century, respectively. The powerful high castle with its imposing keep saw its heyday in the 16th an 17th Century. Unfortunately, it was nearly completely destroyed by the fires of 1724 and 1775 and was never rebuilt.
