Mary´s Column

Wernstein am Inn, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

This column of sandstone and granite stands 17 meters tall and was erected in 1646 by J. Pock. The column reminds of the vow that Emperor Ferdinand III made when Vienna was endangered by a Swedish invasion.
Emperor Leopold I decided to substitute the stony Mary´s Column for a bronze one and is said to have laid the cornerstone of the pedestal himself.

The execution was entrusted to the imperial & royal plasterworker Balthasar Herold.
In 1667, Emperor Leopold I gave the original Mary´s Column, made of stone, to Count Georg Ludwig of Sinzendorf. The Count then had the column taken to Wernstein and erected on the banks of the River Inn.
