For more than 500 years, Greinburg Castle, the oldest residential castle in Austria, has been enthroned majestically above the town of Grein and the Danube.

-> For architecture lovers

It was built between 1488 and 1495 by Heinrich and Siegmund Prüschenk with the imperial approval of Emperor Friedrich III and was one of the first castles in the German-speaking world.
The castle has a special place in the heart of the ducal family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Acquired by Duke Ernst I in 1823, it served as an Austrian residence and hunting lodge for the following generations.
Historical ceremonial rooms await visitors on a tour of the palace:
the magnificent arcaded courtyard, the imposing Knights' Hall and the castle chapel.
The Sala Terrena lined with Danube pebbles and the diamond vault with its fascinating play of light and shadow are unique.

A special feature - and only open to the public on a guided tour - are the private festive rooms of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
The precious furnishings with furniture and paintings privately owned by the ducal family present the exciting history of the internationally important noble family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
In the Upper Austrian Maritime Museum, numerous models provide an insight into the shipping history of the Danube and its tributaries.
