The dam of the Rannatal was constructed from 1947 to 1950 by the former "OÖ Kraftwerke AG". The artificial lake behind the dam serves as a water reservoir for the hydroelectic power station of Kramesau.

Because of the dam, which is about 50 metres high and has an extend of 125 metres, the Ranna is dammed up 4 km until the village Oberkappl to 2,35 millions cubic metres.
