Pfarrkirche Pfarrkirchen

Pfarrkirchen im Mühlkreis, Oberösterreich, Österreich

The parish of Pfarrkirchen is one of the "original parishes" in the country. The church was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century.

The Loreto Chapel by Master Jacob Auer from 1694 depicts the house of Mary of Nazareth.

Parish church:
Due to its location, size and furnishings, the parish church was a visible sign of the rising power of the Passau diocese.

The present church building dates back to the first half of the 13th century. This late Romanesque building was extended in the 15th century in the Gothic style.

In 1697, the church was redesigned in the Baroque style by the Italian artists Giovanni Carlone and the plasterer Giovanni Batista Carlone. The furnishings were created exclusively by local masters in the period up to 1735.
The rich frescoes were painted over over time and fell into oblivion. The frescoes were discovered and uncovered in 1992.

Guided tours for groups by appointment only.

Loreto Chapel:
The Loreto Chapel is located next to the parish church.

It was copied from the "Flying House" of Loreto in Italy. Even the holes in the beams and cracks in the wall were designed to match the original as closely as possible.
The centerpiece of the Loreto Chapel is the black Madonna on the back wall.

Apart from a few changes, the chapel has been preserved fairly faithfully.
