The Upper Austrian. A suit rethought

People wear traditional costume. Every generation wears its own dress and yet there are lines of development that continue over decades and centuries. For 90 years, Upper Austria has had a provincial suit that has been adapted to the era and is now to be given a fourth new edition.

In its origin, but also in its tradition and culture, there are complex connections between traditional costume and fashion, society, politics and history.  Based on the historical diversity of men's clothing from the 18th to the 20th century from the collection of the Upper Austrian Regional Museum, we invited several designers to work on a new development. It soon became clear that Upper Austria has a variety of clothing traditions with great historical differences, some of which still persist today. The Innviertel is clearly distinguishable from the Mühlviertel, the Salzkammergut from the central region and the Hausruckviertel. Finding a bracket for the whole of Upper Austria is a challenge.

The results are exciting, which span the gap between tradition and the future and thus rethink the regional suit, affectionately called "Upper Austrian". Visitors are invited to choose their favourite "new Upper Austrian".
