Short hike starting from the Riverresort Donauschlinge on gravel and hiking trails to the Schlögener Donauschlinge viewpoint.
In the Danube region of Upper Austria lies one of Austria's most famous and beautiful postcard motifs – the Schlögener Schlinge. Here the Danube winds elegantly and curvaceously through the landscape, prompting every hiker on the Danube Trail to stop for a photo. The best view of the Danube bend is from the Schlögener Blick viewpoint. This rarity – called an "epigenetic breakthrough valley" – was formed when the Danube carved its meandering bed into the soft layers of the Tertiary period and later had to maintain this path through the hard granite rock. Due to the subsequent uplift of the landmass, the Danube cut almost 300 m deep and thus created the gorge, which forms almost a full circle in the Schlögener Schlinge.
