Freistadt Castle was built in the northern part of town in the 14th century. The Museum has an impressive collection of 17,000 exhibits. The major part of them is presented in the castle's keep and in the south wing. A great number of exhibits from the town´s past, the turret parlor and an impressive panoramic view of the old town will make a visit to the castle a unique experience.
The Museum has three main themes of exhibition:
Folklore:
Barber´s and pharmacist´s tools, customs around birth, wedding and death, annuals of peasants and the middle classes; wrought-iron crosses, exhibits on worship (faith and myth), ancient clocks; exhibits on school, leisure time, hunting, medieval judiciary; textiles and clothes, such as blueprint, traditional costumes, farmhouse furniture...
Trade:
work pieces and tools of various skilled trades, such as metalworker, potter, gold and silversmith, brass-founder, pewterer, coppersmith, hatter; guild house with shop and flags, symbol of the guilds.
Verre Églomisé Pictures:
On display are verre églomisé pictures dating back to 1780 till 1930 from Sandl, Buchers and other production sites.
Our permanent display is completed by various special exhibitions, guided tours, special events and educational activities for children and the young.
