Pop music loves to tell stories of absolutes: of clear stances, clear emotions, clear sounds. But reality is often more contradictory. This is exactly where My Ugly Clementine comes in. The Viennese band isn’t interested in “either/or,” but rather in what lies in between. In moments when uncertainty isn’t concealed but becomes visible. In energy that isn’t smooth but creates friction. Founded in 2019 by Sophie Lindinger, the band—featuring Mira Lu Kovacs and Nastasja Ronck on guitars and Günther Paulitsch on drums—brings together several defining voices of the Viennese music scene. The term “supergroup” came up early on—not as a marketing gimmick, but as a reaction to the project’s obvious artistic substance. Even their first concert sold out in no time, long before any music had even been released. An unusual start that quickly proved justified: The debut single “Never Be Yours” shot to the top of the FM4 charts, and the album “Vitamin C” received accolades across Europe. Since then, one milestone has followed another: festival appearances at events like Eurosonic Noorderslag, several Amadeus Awards, and steadily growing international attention. But success alone doesn’t explain why this band resonates with so many people. My Ugly Clementine combine a raw, guitar-driven directness with a keen sense of melody. Their songs address topics like feminism, equality, and empowerment without ever coming across as preachy. It’s an approach that’s political because it takes experiences seriously—both their own and those of others. With their third album, \*Apply Autonomy\*, they further sharpen this profile. The tracks sound more immediate, sometimes more impetuous, and at other times almost fragile. It’s an album that doesn’t resolve tensions but rather harnesses them productively. On stage, it becomes clear just how consistently this approach is thought through. My Ugly Clementine seek connection, ask questions, and create space. They come across as attentive and present without completely erasing the distance between the stage and the audience. It is precisely this that creates a special dynamic: the concerts remain intense without losing themselves in pathos. Live, the songs gain both intensity and openness.
