Strudengauer 9er     Hiking maps and information board, mobile phone checkpoint at the hiking trail starting point at the Greiner Donaulände (bus stop, opposite the "Schinakel" café-restaurant)
from stone to stone (Marienstein, Mondstein, Frauenstein, Hexenstein, Gobel, Gipfelstein)
hiking marathon in Strudengau through 9 municipalities
42 km 1370 m
challenging day tour or 3 stages

Stage 1:
The MYSTICAL
20 km 590 metres half marathon
On the first stage of the Strudengau 9er, brave adventurers hike in the footsteps of our ancestors. The special energy surrounding three significant stones - Marienstein, Mondstein and Frauenstein - has been fuelling the imagination and superstition of the locals for centuries and has given rise to countless legends. On particularly stormy days, especially in winter and during the "Rauhnächte" (rough nights), the devil and his team cross the forests of the Strudengau. "Windstrauka", as the wind is known, can also appear in other guises around the moonstone, for example as an old, blind man or as a particularly beautiful or particularly ugly woman. According to tradition, those who want to make the wind merciful offer it salt, breadcrumbs or feathers.
In mysticism, the area around the moonstone also gives some locals special powers ("baptising women") or causes the souls of the deceased to wander through the woods on certain nights ("Fuchtelmandl"). A plaque in the slate moat commemorates the special fate of a lard merchant who sank into the swamp. The sacrificial bowls at the Frauenstein never seem to dry out and bring good luck to those who ask for it.
Truth or superstition due to the special mysticism of the harsh winter nights in Strudengau - it is not known.

2nd stage:
The leisurely
13 km 300 m   shortened version suitable for pushchairs (11 km 200 m)
The tour for young and old is suitable for pushchairs up to the ascent to the Gobelwarte at the Krenkapelle. It offers the opportunity to explore the varied Mühlviertel hills, to "take a look" at the countryside and enjoy; the ascent to the Reitberg Linde offers a magnificent panoramic view including a rest bench for tired hikers.
Variant for pushchairs; alternating between little-used farm tracks and natural paths.
Gobelwarte: built in 1894, rebuilt in 2018 as a 21 metre high, spectacular steel structure, 484 metres above sea level; drinks fountain
The descent to Grein via Donausteig 1 (Reitsteig) leads along a steep serpentine path and is rewarded with a wonderful view of Grein.

3rd stage:
THE DEMANDING
9 km 480 m summit tour
For experienced hikers, the most demanding stage of the Strudengau 9er offers spectacular rock formations and alpine sections. The summit tour over the summit stone to the Brandstetterkogel has long been known to adventurous hikers in the region. Summit conquerors are rewarded with a marvellous view of Grein from the striking rock pulpit on the summit stone. A section of the trail leads via the Matrassteig (alpine section) to the rock gate. The trail was built in 1926 by members of the Austrian Tourist Club and named after the former ÖTK president Franz Matras. The path is secured with ropes and steps. Please note: The trail is not accessible in icy or snowy conditions.
Start: Gasthof "Zur Donaubrücke" Froschauer, Tiefenbach
Stop at the Viktoria Adelheid refuge on the Brandstetterkogel; was built at the same time as the Matrassteig, in 1926
The descent to Wiesen to the Wiesenwirt also offers the opportunity to stop for refreshments.
A spectacular finish to the hiking marathon is guaranteed with the crossing of the Danube on the Danube ferry.
