Starting at the Rudolf Gate, built in 1604 by Emperor Rudolf II, you’ll pass through the inner courtyards of the castle complex. The history of the palace and its various uses is rich and varied, spanning from its first mention in 799 to the opening of the Linz Palace Museum in 1963 and 1966, respectively. After extensive renovations in the 1480s, Emperor Frederick III made the palace his retirement residence. The famous “Friedrichstor”—built in 1481 as part of the medieval castle—still commemorates its builder today with the motto “AEIOU—All the earth is subject to Austria.” Passing St. Martin’s Church (first mentioned in 799 AD; viewing from the outside only), one of Austria’s oldest churches, follow Römerstraße to No. 83. Turn right through the park to reach the Franz-Josef-Warte.**Tip:** Take a detour via Freinbergstraße and Roseggerstraße to visit the Botanical Garden. Neolithic scattered finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Remains of wooden and stone buildings have been found from the Roman Lentia period. A Roman oven has been partially preserved and made accessible under the church floor. Roman gravestones are visible in the wall structure. A document of Charlemagne mentions a chapel of St. Martin in Linz in 799. Numerous archaeological excavations have provided evidence for the reconstruction of a much more spacious central building corresponding to Carolingian royal palaces, whereby the small church can be assumed to be the chapel mentioned in the document. Another opinion assumes that St. Martin's Church is not identical with the church mentioned in 799, but was only built in 955 by Bishop Pilgrim of Passau. St. Martin's Church can lay claim to being the oldest early medieval sacred building on Austrian soil. Under Emperor Leopold, the church was baroqueized in the 17th century, used as a stable by the French occupation in 1741, profaned in 1810 and used as a military depot. It was re-consecrated as a church in 1741 and refurbished in neo-Gothic style. Major renovations were carried out in 1947 and 1975-1977, during which St. Martin's Church was given its current simple artistic form and medieval wall paintings were uncovered. ![Minoritenkirche](https://assets.tourdata.at/660x495/474017/06F26B3FA5923DE13E4C6D8BD5AACAF2F24B8FB2F52E60E0844DE01BAE151082/variant-jpg.jpg "Minoritenkirche") Church of the Minor Friars The Minorite Church used to be part of the Minorite Monastery, which was demolished in 1564. Today it is integrated into the building complex of the Upper Austrian provincial government. That is why it is also called the country house church. The church, completed in 1571, was decorated with masterpieces by J. M. Schmidt (Kremser Schmidt) and B. Altomonte. Important artists like Paul Sattler or the plasterer Kaspar Modler have made their contribution. In 2009 the new organ was inaugurated, which follows the basic concept of a Saxon baroque organ. In 1982, after extensive renovations, it was given its current appearance, whereby the historic vaulted ceiling was of course preserved and contributes to the cosy atmosphere. Renatá Mair started out as a self-taught chef over 30 years ago and discovered her passion for good food and imaginative combinations. She specialises in excellent fish dishes, but all her other dishes - preferably international and her own refined creations - are of the highest quality and are based on hand-picked products. She works with an appreciation of the ingredients, cooks with precision and adds delightful, flavourful Mediterranean accents. Whether it's lamb, Iberian pork, noble fish, langoustine, scampi & Co. - everything is freshly and thoughtfully prepared. There is always a seasonal menu to choose from, and vegetarians will be happy to put together a meat-free menu. Andreas Mair provides knowledgeable answers to questions about the excellent wine selection of around 400 wines. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Weinwirt Oberösterreich. In addition to the restaurant, there is also a small outdoor café. In the middle of the beautiful old town, you can enjoy both: exquisite food and the historic flair of Linz.
