Ein Vogel, der auf ein reichhaltiges Angebot an Hecken und Sträuchern angewiesen ist, ist der Neuntöter. Er ist in Mitteleuropa die häufigste Art in der Familie der Würger. Seine Nahrung sind hauptsächlich Insekten, aber sogar kleine Säugetiere und Vögel. Für den Nestbau werden Dornsträucher wie Schlehen, Weißdorne oder Heckenrosen bevorzugt. Diese benötigt er aber auch für das „Spießen“. Dabei werden Beutetiere auf Dornen oder Stacheln aufgespießt. So kann er bei erfolgreicher Jagd einen Vorrat anlegen. Fluchen kann er - der Teufel!
