Since 1997, Backlab has been supporting artistic development and educational work in rural areas and young artists by giving them access to events, equipment and the expertise of the collective and its members.

The art and culture initiative Backlab is a network of over 150 artists that was founded in 1997 in the Mühlviertel region by five young musicians. The aim was to give young people access to art and culture and to promote and support new projects. Another focus was to bring international acts to events in the Mühlviertel. Backlab is now represented throughout Austria and looks beyond the country's borders.

Initially consisting mainly of musicians and DJs, the collective now provides a network for graphic designers, visualists, graffiti artists, painters, media artists, actors, directors, photographers, performance artists and authors. The musical directions are just as diverse, ranging from techno to songwriting, from noise to electro-pop, from hip-hop to minimal.
Backlab artists also run three music labels: "temp~records" (electronic music in all genres), "!-records" (hip-hop) and Etage Noire Special (electronic club music).
