The reason for the special devotion was an image of "Mary with the Child". This miraculous image had already been the object of private devotion in 1699 after the citizen Weigl, who was cured of a fever through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, as attested by court witnesses. In order to allow all those seeking healing access to the picture, it was mounted on a tree from 1701. The chapel was built as a result of many healings and a tree stump still stands there today as a reminder of its history. Several pilgrimages by boatmen and processions from Enns through Rathausgasse and Brunngasse to the Grünbaum Chapel are recorded in the chronicles. The last thorough renovation was carried out in 1980-84 with the considerable efforts of the Mauthausen volunteer fire brigade, many helpers from the parish and sponsors.
