Until around 200 years ago, the Danube was a wild, unregulated river with many tributaries and side arms. There was erosion and landfall due to floods, which caused the branches to constantly shift. At that time, agricultural use was only possible in the marginal areas of the Austufe. Arable farming and fruit growing can be traced back to the monasteries. Vegetable growing has a long tradition; as early as the 17th century there was talk of "Umurken" (cucumbers) and "Caruil" (cauliflower). Old maps show that Eferding was much closer to the Danube than it is today. This location favoured its development into an important centre for trade and crafts. The markets for vegetables, fish and livestock characterised the lively economic life of the town in the middle of the countryside. As the seat of power and spiritual centre, the churches and castle still dominate the townscape today. The Eferding church tower is a steadfast and loyal inhabitant of the town. Its history can be read in the Danube legend "When church towers wander".
