Quarries are often habitats for birds that have become rare. The Donausteig now enters the basin landscape of the Machland. Formed by deposits from the Danube and its tributaries, it is one of the oldest settlement areas in Europe. Before the first drainage attempts in the middle of the 18th century, it was a large wetland landscape. Although extensive changes to the landscape have taken place over the course of time, the Danube floodplains are the most important areas of the Machland for nature conservation.
