Leonding, Oberösterreich , Österreich

Archduke Maximilian´s Fortification

May 02, 1809 - The Austrian Army was defeated by Napoleon's Troupes in the Battle at Ebelsberg. Deeply shocked about this incident, the Archduke urgently requested the Emperor to erect a fortification around Linz. From 1830 through 1833 a line of defense was drawn around the town, including 32 towers.

Maximilian´s Fortification was never used for defensive purposes, however, many towers and gates have survived and are exemplary buildings of the Biedermeier era.
At Leonding you can admire Tower #9 (today housing the Municipal Museum) and Tower #13.
