The previous visitor record was a total of 680,000 visitors at the spring market in 2012. The spring and autumn markets have existed since 1817, when Emperor Franz I authorised the holding of two markets per year. This makes it the [oldest annual market in Austria](https://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/Superlativen_der_Stadt/ "Superlativen der Stadt"). According to Linz's market regulations, the Urfahraner market usually takes place for nine days in spring from the last Saturday in April and in autumn from the last Saturday in September. The market was originally held on [Steinmetzplatz](https://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/Steinmetzplatz/ "Steinmetzplatz"), later on the site of today's [Bernaschekplatz](https://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/Bernaschekplatz/ "Bernaschekplatz"). It has only been held on the [Urfahrer Donaulände](https://www.linzwiki.at/w/index.php?title=Urfahrer_Donaul%C3%A4nde&action=edit&redlink=1 "Urfahrer Donaulände (Seite nicht vorhanden)") (today's [fairground](https://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/Jahrmarktgel%C3%A4nde/ "Jahrmarktgelände")) since 1902. Originally, the market was exclusively for the trade in goods of all kinds, especially consumer goods and agricultural equipment. At the end of the 19th century, amusements such as shooting galleries and swings were also added. Urfahr was incorporated into Linz in 1919 - at the time of [incorporation](https://www.linzwiki.at/wiki/Eingemeindung/ "Eingemeindung"), the market was initially on the brink of extinction, but after protests, a "market study commission" was founded, which decided to reintroduce the market two years later. The town had to commit to maintaining and promoting the market for all time - which has been done so far. There were separate show halls with magicians and fortune tellers during the interwar period, whereas the market fell silent during and after the Second World War until the occupying forces withdrew.
