Starting from the campsite, an enjoyable summit cycle tour starts from the mythical Danube river in the Machland plain to the Weltstein (478 m) in the Aist-Naarn-Kuppenland. This varied tour offers many highlights: River biking along the Danube and Aist, mountain biking in the Kuppenland, flat biking in the Machland plain. The reward is a fantastic 2.7 km long panoramic descent!

This wonderful cycle tour starts from the campsite in Au on the Danube cycle path. Cycle past the fish statue "Doni the fish" for approx. 4 km down the Danube to the junction to Straß. There you can join the Alpenblick loop. The long ridge is a delight with relaxed cycling and magnificent views of the Alps. A real castle jewel awaits you along the route with the imposing Clam Castle. This varied tour combines river cycling along the Danube, crossing the Machland plain and mountain cycling with far-reaching views.

This tip first takes you 6 km up the Danube to Mauthausen, where you then join the R1.11 3-river loop. A pleasure cycle tour on the trail of the fascination of the land between these rivers. The experience is rounded off with a magnificent view of the historic Danube market in Mauthausen from the Danube cycle ferry landing stage in the rustic alluvial forest.

Highlights:
Starting from the campsite, you first cycle towards Mitterkirchen, where you can combine a short visit to the open-air museum and Celtic village. If you cycle on through the small village of Mettensdorf, it is worth making a short detour to Baumgartenberg Abbey, with its magnificent collegiate church. If you follow the Danube cycle path, it leads directly to the banks of the river as far as Grein. It is possible to cross the Danube in the small shipping town of Grein using the cycle ferry (note ferry times). Return along the south bank of the Danube via Mauthausen.
The former shipping town of Grein is nestled between the Danube and granite. Here, the mighty Danube, steeped in history, merges with the unspoilt, gentle Mühlviertel hills. Inns, patisseries and cafés invite you to linger.
Travelling to Grein: take the regional bus E389 (direction Waldhausen im Strudengau Badesee) to Grein. From here it is only a few minutes' walk to the town centre.

Greinburg Castle has watched over the town and river for half a millennium. Visitors can look forward to a variety of representative rooms from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
During a tour of the castle, visitors can admire historic ceremonial rooms: the magnificent arcaded courtyard, the imposing Knights' Hall and the castle chapel. The Sala Terrena , lined with Danube pebbles, and the diamond vault with its fascinating interplay of light and shadow are unique.

The historic Grein Municipal Theatre (1791) is the oldest preserved civic theatre in Austria. Many special features can be seen: Original preserved barrier seats; a privy, only separated from the auditorium by a curtain, the Napoleon's box and much more. In the newly designed city museum, you can learn more about the eventful history of the city and the theatre's history from its beginnings to the present day.

Off to the water: Strudengau round trips - with the ship "MS Donaunixe" through the Strudengau region
The boat trip starts in Grein, initially leads into the beautiful Strudengau region and downstream past the island of Wörth. On the right bank of Wörth Island, which divides the Danube into two one-way streets here, you pass the villages of Hößgang and Freyenstein. From Willersbach, the route leads along the left bank of the Danube past the villages of Sarmingstein, St. Nikola and Struden with a view of Werfenstein Castle.

Cycle from the campsite along the Danube cycle path for approx. 4 km in the direction of Grein. At Straß, you then join the R1.13 Alpenblick route and follow it through the rustic Mühlviertel cultural landscape to Münzbach and on towards the historic Klam castle market. This is reached after around 23 km and a journey time of 1h 30 min. Here you will find one of Austria's true castle jewels - Clam Castle.

This tip takes you first along the Danube cycle path for approx. 13 km down the Danube towards the Wallsee-Mitterkirchen Danube power station. Then, after the power station, take a short section of the R1.13 Alpenblick loop (against the actual route direction) to Mitterkirchen and on to the open-air and Celtic museum, which you reach after approx. 16 km and a journey time of 50 minutes by bike.

Cycle 6 kilometres along the Danube cycle path to Mauthausen, where you then join the R1.11 3-river loop. Contrary to the original route direction, you take the cycle ferry at Ennshafen harbour and cycle via Enns, the oldest town in Austria. The route continues via Samesleiten to St. Florian to the abbey basilica, which you reach after around 20 km and a journey time of 1h 10 min.

Experience the Romans up close on a journey through time from Passau to Zeiselmauer along the wet border: the experience-orientated exhibition at the Lauriacum Museum in Enns invites you to do just that. In Roman times, Enns, also known as Lauriacum, was the main base and an important administrative town.

You can start this Donausteig loop directly at the campsite in Au. Follow the hiking trail along the Danube to the actual starting point of the circular tour, the town square in Naarn. You walk past the Maria Laab pilgrimage church towards the millstone town of Perg. Tip: A short detour to the millstone museum Steinbrecherhaus makes you realise the former importance of Perg! Numerous panoramic views, such as at the "Stadler Gründe" rest area or at the Kalvarienberg in Perg, offer hikers fantastic views of the Strudengau region.

An unforgettable encounter with nature is possible on the Au nature trail. The circular trail leads from Au to the wooden observation tower, which offers a marvellous panorama of the Danube. The fish ladder is just a few metres away from the tower, as is the walk-in fish figure "Doni the fish". Continuing along the Aulehrpfad, you move away from the Danube and hike into the mystical alluvial forest towards Naarn and then back again.

Alpacas are kept on the Hackner farm in Mitterkirchen and guided tours are also offered. Interesting facts about the keeping of the alpacas and the resulting products are part of the two-hour tour of the farm. You can buy the products directly in the farm shop. Guided tours of the farm are only possible for groups of 5-50 people if booked in advance.
