Rastplatz Kohlstätter

Kleinzell im Mühlkreis, Oberösterreich, Österreich
Rest area Kohlstätter near Ebenmühle in the municipality of Kleinzell.
Wooded highlands...
Around a quarter to a third of the central Mühlviertel highlands are covered by forest, and forest cover has been steadily increasing for a few centuries. Even today, this trend is continuing due to the abandonment of agricultural utilisation ("farmer death") and has led to an increase in forest cover of 5 to 10 % in the last 20 years. Natural forest types would mainly be beech forests, but spruce is actually the dominant forest tree in the current forest landscape. Exceptions are low-lying areas and steep, semi-natural hillside forests, where deciduous trees are more common. If spruce forests are underutilised for decades, they are more susceptible to severe weather events and consequential damage such as beetle infestation (spruce bark beetle) and the small spruce leaf wasp.

Living in harmony with nature is wonderful and if you appreciate nature and its creatures and do not envy others their good fortune, it will thank you for it. "The helpful cones" tell the story of how a forest elf gave a poor charcoal burner a contented life.
